Project Background
Accurate and continuous river flow monitoring is essential for water resource management, flood control, and hydrological analysis. The monitored site is a natural river with a wide cross-section and variable flow conditions, strongly influenced by seasonal rainfall. Traditional manual measurement methods are labor-intensive, pose safety risks during flood seasons, and cannot provide continuous real-time data, making them unsuitable for long-term monitoring.
The river environment includes surface turbulence, floating debris, and sediment, requiring a non-contact and highly reliable measurement solution. The project therefore adopted the KLF110 Radar Flow Meter, which uses radar-based velocity measurement technology to achieve stable, real-time river flow monitoring under complex outdoor conditions, while supporting data integration with hydrological management platforms.

Challenges & Requirements
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Measurement Method | Non-contact surface velocity & water level measurement |
| Installation Environment | Open channel / river, debris and sediment present |
| Operation Conditions | All-weather, continuous outdoor operation |
| Data Communication | Modbus-RTU to SCADA system |
| Maintenance Expectation | Low maintenance, long-term stability |
Solution
The KLF110 Radar Flow Meter was installed above the river channel to measure surface velocity and water level simultaneously using radar technology. Flow rate was calculated in real time based on built-in hydrological algorithms.
As a non-contact solution, the sensor avoided direct exposure to water, sediment, and floating debris.

System Configuration
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| KLF110 Radar Flow Meter | Measures surface velocity and water level |
| Mounting Bracket | Fixed installation above river channel |
| Power Supply | DC power (solar power optional) |
| Communication Interface | Modbus-RTU |
| SCADA Platform | Real-time monitoring, data logging, alarms |
Application Results
- Stable and accurate flow data under varying water levels
- Reduced maintenance compared with contact sensors
- Reliable performance during rain and flood seasons
- Seamless integration with the existing monitoring system
The project demonstrated that radar flow measurement is an effective and low-maintenance solution for open channel and river flow monitoring.
